Driving Towards a Greener Future: Understanding the LeafMark™ and AFI Brake’s Environmental Commitment

News & Insights

As global environmental awareness continues to shape industrial practices, the automotive sector faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable manufacturing standards. One of the most significant advancements in eco-conscious brake technology is the LeafMark™ certification, introduced by MEMA, The Vehicle Suppliers Association. This certification recognises brake manufacturers who have successfully reduced harmful substances in their products, aligning with forward-thinking environmental legislation in regions such as California and Washington.

What is the LeafMark™?

The LeafMark™ is an industry-recognised environmental certification administered by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) in response to laws passed in states like California and Washington under the Better Brakes Law. Brake products awarded with this mark meet stringent requirements for the reduction of heavy metals and copper.

There are three levels of LEAF certification
  • Level A: Contains less than 0.1% by weight of cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and asbestos.
  • Level B: Meets Level A criteria and contains less than 5% copper.
  • Level N: Meets Level A criteria and contains less than 0.5% copper — the strictest standard.

These levels correspond with phased state regulations aimed at reducing the impact of copper and other materials on aquatic ecosystems. The LeafMark™ enables customers to make informed choices when selecting friction materials that support environmental preservation.

AFI Brake's Achievement: LeafMark™ Level N Certification

AFI Brake is proud to have received the LeafMark™ Level N certification, signifying that our brake pads contain less than 0.5% copper by weight. This milestone marks a significant achievement in our ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in friction material manufacturing.

Our dedication to eco-friendly practices extends throughout our production process, from raw material selection to final packaging. The LeafMark™ symbol is displayed clearly on the side of our certified brake pad boxes, reassuring customers that they are choosing products that are compliant with current and future environmental standards.

Why the LeafMark™ Matters for Industry and Environment

Copper and heavy metals in traditional brake pads contribute to water pollution when residues are washed into waterways. These pollutants have been found to harm fish and aquatic life, prompting tighter legislation around their use. The LeafMark™ provides a reliable system for identifying products that reduce environmental harm at the source.

By achieving LeafMark™ certification, manufacturers like AFI Brake not only demonstrate regulatory compliance but also take proactive responsibility in leading the industry towards a cleaner future. It builds trust with partners, OEMs, and environmentally conscious clients who seek reliable, compliant solutions.

A Testament to AFI Brake's Broader Mission

The LeafMark™ is more than a symbol – it represents a shared commitment between regulators, manufacturers, and consumers to create a safer, more sustainable world. For AFI Brake, this certification aligns with our core values of quality, innovation, and responsibility. As part of the AFI Group, AFI Brake Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. continues to pioneer REM (replacement equipment manufacturing) excellence while actively exploring future opportunities in OEM (original equipment manufacturing).

Environmental stewardship remains at the heart of our strategy, and the LeafMark™ is a powerful milestone in our journey. By choosing AFI Brake products, our partners and customers are investing in sustainable performance, proven compliance, and a greener tomorrow.

A Commitment to Performance and Planet

As the demand for cleaner, copper-free brake solutions continues to grow, certifications like the LeafMark™ play a pivotal role in guiding industry progress. AFI Brake is proud to stand at the forefront of this change, delivering solutions that not only perform at the highest level but also protect the environment for future generations.
