Why Do My Brakes Make That Noise? Here’s What You Should Know

News & Insights

Have you ever noticed an odd noise when you tap the brakes? A high-pitched squeal, a grinding sound, or even a strange clicking? If so, you’re not alone—and it’s not something you should ignore.

Brake noise is one of the most common concerns drivers experience, especially as vehicles age or parts begin to wear. While not every sound is a sign of danger, it’s important to know what your brakes are trying to tell you.

Let’s take a closer look at the causes of brake noise, when it’s normal, and when you should book a visit to the workshop.

1. The Most Common Brake Noises (And What They Mean)

Squeaking or Squealing

This is perhaps the most familiar brake sound, and it often happens when:

  • Brake pads are worn: Most brake pads are fitted with a small metal indicator that scrapes against the rotor once the pad wears below a certain thickness (usually 2mm). This is your car’s way of saying “It’s time to replace me!”
  • Dust or moisture: Light squeaks can also be caused by dust, rust, or condensation on the brake rotor, especially after rain or a car wash. These usually go away after a few stops.

🛠️ Tip: If the squealing continues beyond a day or two, get it checked. Worn pads not only reduce stopping power, but can also damage your brake discs.

Grinding

Grinding sounds are usually more serious and require immediate attention. Possible causes include:

  • Pads worn down completely, allowing metal-to-metal contact between the backing plate and rotor
  • Rusted rotors or poor-quality pads
  • Foreign objects like small stones lodged in the calliper area

💡 Ignoring grinding can lead to expensive repairs—not to mention dangerous driving conditions.

Clicking or Clunking

Thumping, pulsing, or vibrations felt through the brake pedal may indicate:

  • Warped brake discs (rotors), usually caused by excessive heat or uneven wear
  • Unevenly worn pads or contaminated brake surfaces
  • Out-of-round drums, if your vehicle uses drum brakes at the rear

These issues can compromise braking consistency, especially at higher speeds.

Thumping or Vibrating

If you hear a clicking noise when braking, it may be due to:

  • Loose brake components, such as calliper bolts or clips
  • Improperly installed brake pads that shift within the calliper
  • Suspension issues mistaken for brake-related noises

Even if your braking feels normal, any unusual mechanical noise is worth investigating to prevent further issues.

2. Are Brake Noises Ever Normal?

In some cases, yes.

A faint squeak right after a cold start or during wet weather is common and usually harmless. Similarly, some performance brake pads may produce more noise due to their material composition (e.g. metallic or ceramic compounds).

But if the noise is persistent, getting louder, or accompanied by a change in braking performance, it’s time to have your vehicle inspected.

3. How Age, Environment & Maintenance Play a Role

Older vehicles—particularly those over 5 years old—are more likely to experience brake-related sounds due to natural wear and tear. Environmental factors like humid weather, dusty roads, or frequent hill driving also increase the stress on your brake system.

Poor maintenance, skipping routine servicing, or installing low-quality brake parts (such as discs and pads with poor heat resistance or fitment issues) also contribute to brake noise and performance problems.

That’s why it’s so important to schedule regular checks and use components from trusted manufacturers.

4. What You Can Do

Here’s how you can keep brake noise at bay and maintain optimal performance:

✅ Inspect brake pads regularly, especially if you hear squealing. Replace if below 2mm thickness.

✅ Flush brake fluid every 2–3 years, and test for water content.

✅ Check the rotors for signs of scoring, warping, or uneven surfaces.

✅ Use quality parts from reliable suppliers that meet industry standards.

✅ Have your brakes cleaned periodically to remove debris or rust build-up.

✅ Get a full brake inspection if your vehicle is over 5 years old or shows unusual noise.
